SaaS and web platforms

A platform connects two populations. Everything else about its design follows from that sentence.

A platform is not a large website. It is a product serving at least two groups with different interests — buyers and sellers, patients and clinicians, landlords and tenants, schools and parents — whose value depends on how many participants each side has.

That imposes a constraint projects routinely underestimate: the cold start. An empty marketplace is useless to buyers and sellers alike. The design must therefore explain how the first side gets value before the second exists, or the best-built platform stays deserted.

SaaS adds another dimension: several customer companies live inside the same software and must never see each other. Data isolation, recurring billing, subscription tiers and the ability to change one customer without breaking the others are architectural decisions taken at the very beginning. They are not added later.

Frequently asked questions

How do you launch a platform with no users?

By making one side useful on its own. A management tool that serves the seller even with no buyer, a directory that serves the visitor even with no signups: build that one-way value first, then open the matching. That is how most marketplaces actually started.

Must everything be built before launch?

No. A narrow first version in the hands of real users teaches in a month what six months of meetings will not. The danger with a platform is building at length for demand you have assumed.

How is customer data isolated?

By a separation enforced at the data layer and checked on every query, not by a condition added in the interface. This is the question to put to any SaaS supplier: the answer separates a considered architecture from a site hastily adapted.

Can you handle recurring payments across borders?

Yes, but the mechanics depend on your legal entity, the currency and your customers’ countries. It belongs in scoping, because it shapes the corporate structure as much as the technical one — and it has blocked projects that discovered it too late.
